Geography and social studies education in middle and high school
The major and minor in Geography Teaching prepares students for a
career in teaching geography (as part of a social studies curriculum)
at the secondary (grades 7-12) level. Therefore, it is partially
designed and governed by the McKay School of Education. The geographic
focus of this program is intended to help future teachers understand
and teach the basic principles of human, physical, and regional
geography. The program also includes analytical and technical courses
that geography teachers can use to develop innovative learning
activities that will develop higher-order skills in their own students.
This
program is ideal for students who: believe geography should have a
strong impact on future society, enjoy working with teenagers, are
interested in the entire breadth of geographic topics, and are
concerned about the state of geographic education and public geographic
knowledge.
